JournalCon 2002
October 9, 2002

I can't believe I didn't tell you all about this soon enough so some of you could go with me. Darlinggirl told me about it last year and then in August we talked about maybe meeting there. But then she couldn't make it and I decided since it was right here in San Francisco, I better not miss it.

Now I'm hooked. I'm just gonna have to go back next year no matter where they decide to hold it.

This past weekend was the third annual conference for online journalers called JournalCon. There were about seventy attendees who came from all over the U.S. There were panel discussions, journal readings, a banquet, and lots of great conversations.

Each panel discussion was a chance to hear from a handful of journalists on a subject they were familiar with, like "Full Disclosure: How Much is Too Much?", "Kiss and Tell: Writing About Sex in You Online Journal," and "How to Have the Most Popular Journal in the History of the Universe." All with liberal doses of humor as well as really helpful and thought-provoking ideas.

But the best part was the people. I don't know when I have been with a more creative and friendly and authentic group of people. No one felt like a stranger by the end of the first evening's banquet at a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. And though I missed it, I hear the next night of Karaoke singing in Japantown was downright riotous, a JournalCon tradition that I'll make sure I don't miss next year.

And the writing. Some amazing journal pieces. So good. So funny.

If you'd like to read some of the journals of the attendees, check out the JournalCon webring. I promise you find some amazing treasures there.

So let's start now making plans to get a whole bunch of us together at the next one. I'll let you know as soon as I know when and where it will be.
