To Plant or - (you know the rest) May 13, 2007
I've never been much of one for being outdoors. The most time I spent outside last summer was when Tarantula and I waited too long to get in out of the rain. We were sitting at the patio table when it started. We thought it was just going to be a brief, light shower and the umbrella would protect us. By the time we realized how wrong we were, we stayed dryer scrunched up at the table under the umbrella then if we'd made a run for the house. Too, we'd already downed enough peach spumante that running really wasn't in the cards.
That was then, this is now and in the now I'm really enjoying being outside. This has paid off in arable land. I love the way that sounds, like it's more than just narrow beds that border our tiny back yard. But arable it is, because I've been weeding and turning, a few feet at a time. I doubt I'll get all the beds done this spring but I'm dreaming big. I'm also thinking of putting plants out early.
We're zone 4 and the tradition has been not to put plants out until after Memorial Day. Even then you put them out and hoped, because bad weather still wasn't totally out of the question. But I'm sitting here looking at lilacs in bloom, something that didn't used to happen until Memorial Day, either. So I think I'm going to live on the ragged edge once more and get some plants this week. It's enough to make your heart pound, isn't it?
