|I'm In a Vegetative State|
April 20, 2017
Nougat got me up at 7:30 this morning. She didn't want to go back in, so we stayed outside for an hour. It's coolest then, and pleasant, but I'd still rather go back to bed and back to sleep!
When I did finally try to go back to bed, she only let me stay for 20 minutes. So, back outside we went by 9. Came in at 10:30. Then I did go back to bed for an hour. Consequently, I accomplished exactly nothing all day. I wanted to Swiffer the floors, but by noon, it was too warm to put that much effort into anything.
So, we watched some TV (one of the Hallmark channels reruns "Monk" in the afternoons, and we've been watching them again. They're still brilliant)
Around 3 (when "Monk" ended), we went out to Steak 'N Shake. Mom wanted the Portobello Swiss burger, and she had a coupon. It was nice to get out (even if I had to drive), but I was a little disappointed in S'NS this time. The burger was just OK, but not as good as usual. The onion rings weren't as crispy, either. The cole slaw was good, though. I wanted to try their new Peanut Butter milkshake, but they were all out. I had a dark chocolate shake instead. It was as good as always, but I was disappointed I didn't get what I wanted.....it's not like we go there that often.
Actually, I think the burgers at Denny's were better than the one I had today. I usually love Steak 'N Shake, but today, they let me down.
Nougat was so good. She didn't try to follow us into the garage, just lay on my bed looking forlorn. She was right at the door when we came home, and thrilled to see us. She was especially thrilled by the french fries in my purse. Brother and I each gave her one, and I put the rest, still in the napkin on the table. Didn't she stand up and help herself to the remaining fries?!!? (I didn't scold her though. They were for her, after all)
As soon as she was done with her treats, she needed to go out. I didn't last more than 15 mins outside. It's HOT in the sun, and at this time of day, the sun is full bore in the backyard......not a spot of shade to be had. After 15 mins I started feeling my neck burning, and I started getting a headache. So we came in.
I gave her dinner, and now Mom is out with her, cause I can't face going back out into that sun, even though I've been in the house for 20 minutes. I don't think Mom will keep her out long, either. Mom seems to tolerate the heat far better than I do.
I've had both my ceiling and desk fans running continuously for most of this week, and I haven't heard a single complaint from Mom. Hallelujah!
Tomorrow our next 'farm bag' arrives. We're getting lots of goodies:
- red potatoes
- collard greens
- tomato medley
- candy cane beets (it was supposed to be carrots, but we requested the beets instead)
- swiss chard (we added this as an extra item)
- green and yellow globe zucchini
- flat "Dutch" cabbage
- rosemarry ciabatta bread
We've got ham in the fridge, to go with the collards. I'll roast the beets and broccoli, and we'll have the swiss chard with the rest of the lamb and some ciabatta. I'm planning to stuff some of the cabbage leaves. Not sure what I'll do with the rest.....maybe a stir fry or some coleslaw. If I run out of ideas, the CSA's chef posts recipes to accompany each week's harvest.
This will only be our second delivery, but so far, I'm really liking the farm bags. The produce has been fresh and tasty, the amount we get is enough for 3 (often more than one meal), the variety nice (even though we're getting potatoes and broccoli again), and you sure can't beat home delivery!
Anyway, I guess that's about all I have for today. Like I said, I didn't do much, so there's not much to say, and I babbled on about veggies.
