This past weekend we hosted a surprise party for one of our friends who was turning the BIG, not to mention decrepit, SIX-OH!! SIXTY!!! OMG!!!!
She has been so depressed and has been "brow beating" her husband about everyone's lack of attention to her birthday for ages. That she's never had a b'day party in her entire life, yada, yada, yada. (We even got tired of hearing about it)
So, with his (small) checkbook we planned and assembled "said" party for her birthday. The original plan was to have a picnic, but storms threatened about an hour before the planned start time (of course) so we moved everything in the house. All the guests arrived on time, parked out of sight (not an easy feat), the food was ready and I watched for the guest of honor.
I saw them pull up!!
Her husband's original "story" to her was that we were all going to go to dinner. I know it was a chore for him, but he got her there on time. They came to the door and I answered and told them to come in because we had had a minor disaster and were running behind. I positioned myself behind the "honoree" (so photos could be taken) as she went through the hallway into the living room when they all yelled "surprise" .... the scream startled her and she fell backwards ...... I caught her before she hit the floor, so no broken hip for the geriatric honoree.
It turned out to be as close to a perfect party that you can have .... well, except for the weather.
