Celebrated my 41st birthday a couple days ago. It passed quietly and I didn't get the only present I wanted. I wasn't surprised, but it would have seriously made my day. Still, as my birthdays have gone, it wasn't bad.
Today was better. Have a friend over for the night. I fixed a killer dinner of spaghetti with homemade sauce while EP provided a delicious apple sauce cake for dessert. Afterward, we watched television, joked and tinkered with the stuff to start a Pathfinder game (think Dungeons & Dragons) tomorrow. It should be fun and maybe inspire me to do some creative writing, which is important since I signed up for National Novel Writing Month this November.
The one sad event to the day occurred on a run to Walmart. As we pulled in, I saw a big guy exchanging words with a younger guy & his girlfriend/wife. Things were getting pretty heated but I couldn't tell why. Then I noticed a little girl lying next to the car, weakly rolling back & forth on the ground. I watched for a couple minutes, partly in case I would be needed as a witness if a fracas had broken out. After a few minutes, thing seem to settle so I got out of the car and spoke to the big guy & his wife, who had been standing nearby at their car.
Turns out the younger guy & his wife had essentially beaten the hell out of their little girl because she was throwing a tantrum. The mother had thrown her into her car seat & slapped her a couple times. Then, the father had dragged her out and slapped/hit her a few more times, actually bloodying the kid's face. The big guy & some others had kept them there while the big guy's wife had called the cops.
When I came out of the store, the drama was still occurring but winding down. The cops had arrived and the little girl had been taken to a local hospital by ambulance to be checked out. The cop I spoke with indicated that from reports that the little girl was going to be OK. Meanwhile, they had taken two written witness statements about the abuse and the cops were holding the parents. It looked like there was going to be a significant investigation to the assault, including getting Walmart's security tapes.
I am hoping the pricks face some serious repercussions for their actions. No one should ever hit a child like that.
