|the wild marsh by rick bass|
April 28, 2013
has a subtitle which I can't recall at the moment. anyway, rick takes us thru 12 months of one year at his cabin with his wife & 2 daughters in the yaak valley of northwest Montana. (my FAVORITE place in the world!) I love rick bass, his writing, his life..so this is like visiting with an old friend in a valley I've visited twice now and have always said i'd like my ashes to rest in.
so far I'm into February. in January there was the detail about 10 days of NON STOP snow, heavy curtain like snow, 10 days. February he talks about old man's beard moss, that black hairy stuff on all the larches and old trees there, anyway, how the winds of feb blow it off the branches and it falls on the snow. warmer and dark, it melts the top layer, sinking a little. then the snow falls and cold nights come and seal the moss under the snow or ice. traps it in a layer...black and spreading threads under ice til it all melts and eventually the moss is left as natural litter on the ground itself come spring. how feb, in reality the shortest month of the year can sometimes, most years feel endless, like the longest for sure.
