|What A Croc!!|
May 13, 2008
We have a new YA (young adult) manager at the library. She started a couple of months ago. She's a nice young woman, very perky. In addition to being the YA dept manager, she's also the Page Manager. There's a Page Supervisor, but he answers to the YA manager.
This morning, while I was signing in, Tonia told me that Dinah, the YA manager has told the pages that they may not wear crocs at work. The dress code at the library (for everyone, including pages) is "business casual, and Dinah has deemed Crocs not sufficiently 'businesslike'.
One of the pages, apparently pointed out that 'the lady in the Discovery Room' wears Crocs all the time. I don't know what Dinah had to say about that.
I've been wearing my Crocs for nearly 3 years now, and have never been told they were inappropriate....not even from the library director, who's only comments about my footwear have been to ask if I have a different color pair of crocs to match every outfit.
I can understand not wanting anyone, including pages, to appear slovenly, but I can't understand why wearing comfortable shoes for a job that requires a lot of standing should pose a problem.
Interestingly enough, they're allowed to wear their Ipods (the policy is that they may only have one earbud in, but that's not always adhered to). Why would Ipods be considered 'business casual' but not crocs?
Tonia said she didn't know what, if anything, would come of this...but if a page were to say anything to me about it, I should just mention that I'm not a page.
(I've never had any problem at the other library where I AM a page, either. In fact, their dress policy is much more lenient when it comes to the pages. We can wear jeans and tee shirts [not permitted at the other library for ANYone], so long as they're not offensive, ripped, dirty, etc. But we can't have Ipods)
I think the whole thing is utterly ridiculous. Professional people wear crocs (Tonia mentioned that her son's heart surgeon wore them)
I told Tonia that if it becomes necessary I would get a note from my doctor, because my crocs are the only shoes I find comfortable enough to wear every day.
Can you imagine anything so silly as banning crocs from the LIBRARY????
