Snarky June 22, 2018
Lois called this afternoon on her way home from visiting Karen and Scott. She didn't mention Scott or how he's doing. She told me a little of Karen's various health issues.
I asked what they did, and she told me that two of the days, they went shopping. Once to the outlet mall, once to a local shopping center. Yesterday they went to the casino.I
I know this is petty and snarky, but I'm going to say it anyway. (It's *my* diary after all). My thought as she was telling me was, "I didn't miss a thing." and "Thank God I didn't have to be there!" I would not have enjoyed myself at those outings.
I did, however, enjoy chatting with Lois on the phone. She was kind enough (at my request) to send me a photo of the front of my (former) house. I wanted to see if Lou and Rosie were still there and doing all right. They are the two mulberry trees I planted in the front yard in honor of (and named for) my grandparents. I was gratified to see them both thriving. They now shade the whole front yard. Made me a little wistful.
We just had a very brief, somewhat heavy downpour. Nougat and I were out about 20 minutes ago, and it was sunny and so humid I could barely breathe. Then we had that cloudburst, and now the sun is out again. The rain barely lasted 5 minutes. And I bet it got even more muggy..........if that's even possible.
Mom was outside with Nougat this morning(I was inside, baking a cake) and Paul came by. He returned the container I'd given him with panzanella. Now we can give him some cake or something else). He brought us a couple of navel oranges. I like this neighborly food exchange. 😋 It's like a private CSA! 😁
This morning, Mom and I took Nougat in the car. We had to run to Dollar General for a box of fame mix. We are scratch bakers normally, but I saw a recipe on "The Chew" yesterday for Strawberry Lemonade Cake, and we just had to try it. We had everything we needed, except the cake mix.
Nougat was more than happy to come along, even if it was only a quick trip and we only went around the corner.
The cake smelled and looks delicious. We'll try it after "Jeopardy". Hope it's as good as it appears. (I'll give a report)
After dessert:
Sitting outside withNougat. The sun is shining. The rain earlier, although brief, successfully cooled things off. Still a tad humid, but there is a refreshing breeze. There are rumbles of thunder off in the distance, but it's love!y here in the yard.
We had our dessert. The strawberry lemonade cake was so scrummy, the three of us managed to devour half of it in a single sitting! It would be a great cake to take on a picnic, or to serve at afternoon tea in the summer. It would pair well with iced tea or lemonade (no surprise there), but I preferred it with a glass of cold milk. Definitely a keeper.
